Conference February 2000
International Socialist Movement Launched
February 6th 2000 saw an all-members meeting of CWI Scotland in Glasgow.
CWI Scotland was originally called Scottish Militant Labour and played
the key role in launching the Scottish Socialist Alliance and subsequently
the Scottish Socialist Party.
The meeting was attended by CWI activists from all over Scotland and
vistors from the Socialist Party (England and Wales) and the CWI International
Executive. The meeting kicked off with a discussion on political perspectives
for Scotland. Speakers and contributors pointed to the development of the
SSP and the growing influence of the ideas of socialism in Scottish society.
The effects of globalisation and a worldwide backlash against the capitalist
free market were noted.
The main discussion of the day was on the relaunch of CWI Scotland as
the International Socialist Movement, Marxist Platform of the SSP.
It was agreed
-
To launch the International Socialist Movement.
-
To build branches wherever there are supporters of the CWI in Scotland.
-
To call on class-fighters in the SSP to support our platform and join the
ISM.
-
To elect a national convener.
-
To expand production and sales of the International Socialist and our online
communications.
Frances Curran was elected as national convener.
The meeting ended with an outline of the development of the CWI worldwide
by Tony Saunois of the CWI International Executive Committee.
We hope to bring the ideas of Marxism to a new audience and to fight
as part of the SSP for a socialist future for Scotland and for our working
class brothers and sisters worldwide.
