SSP Election Results

The final total vote for the Scottish Socialist Party in the 2001 General Election was 72, 518 which represents 3.1% of the vote. This represents a tremendous advance for the SSP who stood in every seat in Scotland in this election. Undoubtedly the result was affected by the low turnout nationally - in itself a verdict on Blair. The SSP has recruited over 1000 new members and is confident of returning several SSP MSP's in the Scottish Parliament elections in two years time.

Tommy Sheridan, convener of the SSP hailed the result as historic "Scotland now has five political parties. We have not realised the 100,000 target, which we knew was ambitious, but what we didn't foresee was the huge drop in turnout which is a badge of shame for the four big business parties,"

"They have had wall-to-wall, cover-to-cover TV and newspaper coverage, and yet they have failed to inspire the electorate of Glasgow and Scotland."

"Despite the political censorship of our campaign by the broadcast media and the daily broadsheets, we have secured a magnificent 70,000 votes for genuine, radical socialism and we feel we have now arrived on the political scene in Scotland."

"In the next two years, we will build a party that will deliver not one MSP, but eight, one for every region in Scotland."

Among the highlights of the SSP result were strong showings in the Glasgow seats, notably Glasgow Pollok where Keith Baldessara won 10% for the SSP and Glasgow Springburn where Carolyn Leckie gained 7.8%. The party vote was also strengthened in Edinburgh where it increased its vote by 50%. One of the last seats to declare was the most northerly seat in the UK, Orkney and Shetland where the SSP won an unprecedented 4.6%.
